Marlou Jongkees
Postdoctoral Researcher
Marlou Jongkees joined the Computational Pathology Group as a postdoctoral researcher in October 2026. Under the supervision of Geert Litjens and Avital Amir, she works on the MohsAIc project, which aims to bring AI-based decision-support software into clinical practice for Mohs surgery. The AI algorithm for basal cell carcinoma is evaluated for its clinical usability and integration into the intraoperative Mohs workflow, as well as its ability to support accurate real-time tumor margin assessment and improve efficiency by reducing slide-reading time and second reads. The project also explores the application in other skin cancers, including cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
Marlou obtained her medical degree and doctorate from Erasmus University Medical Center. Her PhD research centered on the largest observational study of COVID-19 vaccine responses in people with HIV, contributing to vaccination policy for this vulnerable population. She subsequently worked as a physician in Internal Medicine at St. Antonius Hospital. In January 2028, she will begin her residency in pathology at Radboudumc.
