🔮The PROMETHEUS Project
Clinical decisions in prostate cancer management require physicians to combine imaging, prostate-specific antigen trajectories, histopathology, comorbidities, prior findings, treatments, clinical guidelines and long-term outcomes. In this PhD position, embedded within the European Innovation Council PROMETHEUS project, you will develop and validate prostate AI systems that integrate multimodal health data into a holistic representation of the patient and support personalised clinical decision-making.
🏥 Our Research Environment
With 80+ researchers, the Diagnostic Image Analysis Group and Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Intervention Center at Radboud University Medical Center bring together world-renowned expertise in medical AI, prostate imaging, and image-guided intervention.
🌏 Our Prior Research
We actively maintain the world's largest international cohort of MRI examinations for prostate cancer detection, comprising 22,000+ patient cases from 46 cities across 22 countries, in collaboration with a growing scientific consortium of academic and community hospitals, researchers and clinicians. Our prior research published in The Lancet Oncology includes landmark studies of AI systems for prostate cancer (PI-CAI) and pancreatic cancer (PANORAMA) detection, where we rigorously benchmarked state-of-the-art models in comparison to 60+ radiologists from 45 centers in 20 countries under multidisciplinary oversight.
👩💻 Who Should Apply?
We welcome candidates with an MSc or equivalent expertise in AI, medicine, computer or data science, biomedical engineering, technical medicine, or a related field. You should have strong programming skills (Python, PyTorch), a solid foundation in deep learning (preferably including multimodal learning and longitudinal modelling), and an interest in clinically grounded oncology research.
We particularly encourage applications from individuals across all groups traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields.
📄 Terms of Employment
You will be appointed for four years as a PhD candidate with the standard salary and secondary conditions for PhD candidates in the Netherlands. The research should result in publications, leading up to a PhD thesis.
